First Person Funny

I love reading. I’ve been a “reader” since a very young age. I love it when I get caught up in a book and the main character’s problems become things I simply have to solve. I can’t go to sleep when the bad guy is moments away from hurting the good guy. And nothing makes me happier than when I see one of my students beginning to embrace books the way I do.

I tell you that to tell you this….

A few of my students have gotten REALLY into Accelerated Reader this year. I normally am not a huge fan of the program, but its motivating them to read, so who am I to argue?! We just finished reading Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. It’s a wonderful book written about a boy named Peter Hatcher and his little brother Fudge. It’s written in the first person, so the reader is supposed to believe that Peter wrote the book.

Today, as one of my favorite little readers was going to take the AR test on the book, she decided to look it up by author. She tried typing “Judy Blume” first, which didn’t work because it’s in by last name first. So as I’m walking over to help her find the book, she’s typing in “Peter Hatcher” as the author.

And it’s moments like that remind me why I became a teacher.

Tee hee...that makes me giggle...and long for the simpler days of being a student. :) You're doing great work with those kids, Ash. Don't ever doubt it!
